The Warsaw wrestling team battled to a 4-1 record and picked up a big conference win against Wawasee at the Wawasee Super Duals today. The Tigers shared a claim to the top spot with Wawasee and Anderson, who both also went 4-1. Wawasee was awarded the team championship on separation criteria.
The competition between teams was tight all day and the Tigers has to rally in multiple rounds.
In the opening round, Warsaw held on to an early lead to put away West Noble 37-35.
Round two also saw Warsaw build a lead but was unable to hold off a late run by Anderson who handed the Tigers their first loss of the season at 34-35.
In round three, Warsaw found big team points with five pins that helped put away conference rival, Wawasee by a 41-32 score.
Warsaw needed a huge run in the last five matches of round four. Four consecutive pins and a to-the-wire decision in the final match put Warsaw in front of Eastside 39-36.
The day’s final round also gave the Tigers some breathing room. Warsaw jumped on Fairfield early and closed the day with a 60-16 win.
Warsaw is now 9-1 for the season and 2-0 in the NLC.
Three Tiger wrestlers went 5-0 on the day:
Brock Hueber with 5 pins at 195 lbs,
Jacob Linky with 3 pins at 160 lbs, and Liam Nolin with 1 pin, and two major decisions at 145 lbs.
Three other Tigers were 4-1:
Brandon Estepp at 170 had 3 pins, Isaiah Owens had a pin and a tech-fall at 132 lbs,
and Jayton Brock with 1 pin at 182 lbs.
Brock Hogenson (132) and Will Roberts (285) both earned three pins for the Tigers.
